Examining the Affiliate Model
Affiliate marketing is certainly nothing new and has been around for many years. It is such a great business model for both the business owner and the affiliates promoting the products. The business owner gets the advantage of having their own sales force that they only pay when they make a sale. Then the affiliates benefit because they don’t have to create products, ship inventory, deal with customers, issue refunds or any of that at all.
The affiliate model basically means that an affiliate can promote a product through a special link. This is called their affiliate link and is unique to them. When they send someone through this link to a product website and that person buys something, the affiliate then earns a percentage of that sale. They don’t have to do anything else, just wait to get paid.
There are obviously many things involved in becoming a successful affiliate, such as choosing the right products, driving traffic to the product site etc. But there’s no doubt about it that the affiliate model certainly benefits both parties.
Most of the largest companies online have affiliate programs including Amazon and eBay. Actually Amazon had one of the very first ones and really led from the front with affiliate marketing. They immediately saw the potential it had and made all their products available for affiliates to promote. Although they only start off by paying new affiliates 4% of every sale, there aren’t many limits on the total sale amount so it can still lead to quite a some of money for the affiliate.
Selling digital products is also popular and Clickbank are the leader in that area. They have thousands of products that affiliates can promote and earn up to 75% of each sale. So the profit margins can be higher than selling physical items. But on the reverse side, refunds are more common with digital items so it does balance its way out.
Overall, the affiliate model is one that benefits both the affiliate and the product owner, so it is a business model that will be around for many years to come.
