The Top 10 Most Important Skills You Need To Get Started In Internet Marketing

Nov 13th, 2008 by Jo Han Mok | 7

In my previous post, I talked about the importance of working in your business versus working on your business.

Here is a my personal list of the top 10 basic skills you should master, if you’re dead serious about being able to set up websites that can crank out cash like clockwork.

Obviously, just like riding a bike, I prescribe mastering these skills to the degree of unconscious competence as these are ‘rinse and repeat’ skills you’d be using on a everyday basis in your Internet business.

Getting Started Skill #1: Registering a domain and getting it hosted.

Getting Started Skill #2: Basic Cpanel understanding and administration. (setting up email accounts, checking traffic stats, etc)

Getting Started Skill #3: FTP (By far the most ’scary’ for most newbies possibly cos the term file transfer protocol is a tad initimidating, although once you get it, it’s as simple as drag and drop.)

Getting Started Skill #4: Understanding how autoresponders work and how to set up mailing lists

Getting Started Skill #5: How to create an opt-in form

Getting Started Skill #6: How to create a properly formatted sales letter with proper tabling

Getting Started Skill #7: How to create a payment button/link and thankyou page

Getting Started Skill #8: How to set up a blog using fantastico

Getting Started Skill #9: How to create a PDF

Getting Started Skill #10: How to add video/audio to your webpage

Notice these are skills inherent in working in the business. Skills for working on the business are more like copywriting, joint venturing, keyword research etc, which represent a totally different ball game.

What do you think? Feel free to ‘add’ to this list by leaving your comments.

Hey, I like this post already…

    You know what?

I scored 10/10 on your checklist.

not to brag here, ahem.. but I am proud to have put up my hypnosis minisite myself.
    (except for the graphic.. )

Hmm, that makes me look forward to your next checklist for working ON the business…

Looks like I’d better work on the core skill for working On my business..

    Thanks Jo Han,
    Got to go man…

    I’ve got people to hypnotise.

    Hi All,

I agree with Jo’s List, thankfully I am upto 8 of the skills but there is one more I think that should be added, unless you have the money to outsource, being able to do small alterations to graphics is a very useful skill to have. I am talking about being able to put your name on a blank header.

    Regards

    Terry Cummings

I think Jo Han have a lot of blog on internetmillionairecode.com.

By the way, those are basic skill.

I don’t think we need more advance skill to succeed on internet marketing.
What we need is strategies and methods.
We are internet marketers right….strategies does matter..

    Hi Jo,

That’s a great with the list. I supposed you didn’t miss out HTML knowledge or
you’ve assumed all should know at least a little HTML or “copy & paste” into
FrontPage, Dreamweaver or NVU. Or do you suggest them to use other simple software
    for theirwebpage design?

Hey, for those in need of a professional PDF distiller program, get it here for less than
a pizza with lots of bonuses thrown in! There’s no need to buy heavy weight Adobe that will cost you 300 bucks.

Your Getting Started skills blog was interesting. It is sort of a checklist for newbies who want to enter IM arena. Are they willing to learn these simple things in order to get started? Initially I was intimidated by these things. After slowly practicing these I am confident of doing these myself, though I may not be perfect. Of course, even the expert cannot be perfect; so nothing to worry on that count. However, you have missed out one important skillset - preparing the “mind set”. This lays the foundation for all the skill sets to stay stable and grow.

    Hi Jo,

The most basic skill lacking, but the most needed is ‘patience’.
We all expect to make our fortunes within a week of buying our first “make money” product, which will NEVER happen.
We need to take our time learning each basic skill in your list and thinking about making money perhaps in 6 Months to a years time.

    A very impatient,

    Ken.
